The Oljato Fund

In recognition of the profound benefits provided by their experiences at Camp Oljato, the alumni of the Camp Oljato Staff have created the Oljato Fund, a private entity, to ensure similar experiences will be extended to future generations.

Current Projects

There are also many other projects in Camp which could improve the quality of the facility but probably can not be afforded by the Council. Some of those include:

  • Purchase of a log splitter to reduce fire hazard around Camp (the split wood is used to barter gas and supplies from Benny's marina, too!).
  • Repairs to the Dining Hall
  • Provide several camperships for needy scouts.

Credit where Credit is due!!!

Our Thanks go to a few people who have given a bit more than the "usual" to get the Fund going:

Bruce Brugler not only initiated the idea of the Fund in summer of 98 but put action to his words by leading the organization of the Fund. And now, beyond that, he has educated some powerful people as to the Mission and needs of the Fund. And those people, believing and trusting in Bruce, have donated $20,000 to the Fund! Now that's the definition of effective "education"!

Phil Scoles, along with Steve Wilhite, Paul Kruger, Mike Coleman and others, organized the Reunion in 1998. Phil has kept the roster updated and solicited help as needed from others. (and Phil didn't even get to waterski in 99 due to broken collarbone, pobrecito! Have a Pacifico!)

David Blatner has put together our Website and continues donating time to act as Webmaster and Webhost, giving us a free ride on his own website. Very Cool. Thanks DB.

Jim Johnson has donated the rest of his very nice block prints of Stern Lodge and Oljato Pine for our use as framed gifts to the big-boy donors. These are beautiful and unique!!! Extras may become available to buy.

Jeff Springer has offered to donate furniture from his manufacturing business to refurbish the Lodge. Jim Johnson measured the Lodge and the building plan will be posted and sent to Jeff for his planning. Thanks Jeff!!

Brendon Bloom and Bill Sharpe are in construction management in the Bay Area and have volunteered to help organize some future Camp projects as soon as we decide what to do next.

Oljato Work Parties

The 2001 Oljato work parties are over. However, every year Camp Oljato relies on devoted volunteers to make it happen. Every weekend in June there are work parties to open the camp. You and any friends interested are cordially invited to participate because your assistance is needed. The food is free and the fellowship is great. You may come back tired but you will be filled with a warm sense of accomplishment. You will have helped to introduce a new generation to the enjoyment of a Camp Oljato summer experience

For more information and details of the VIP opening weekend in 2002, contact Ann and Skip Ziman at (650) 327-1189 or e-mail to GZiman@aol.com. Alternatively contact BSA Ranger Skip Nall at (650) 341-5633. These people will be looking forward to hearing from you.

YipYo Alumni!

Our Oljato Fund's initial in-camp project is complete. At the request of the Pacific Skyline Council we funded the removal of granite to allow drainage from behind the Stern Lodge...

important letter from Doug Aitken)

THE OLJATO FUND grew out of the spirit generated at the 1977-1983 Camp Staff reunion at Huntington Lake in 1998. Over 75 people attended, while more than 150 staff alumni were contacted from the 70s and 80s. That group, plus more recent Camp Staffs share the Oljato experience that gave additional depth and meaning to our lives. Our time on the camp staff, ranging from one summer to many years, gave us a unique perspective on life, relationships, honesty, and integrity. It is within our abilities to perpetuate those virtues in many others by giving back some time, leadership, or just simple dollars.

As the case with most non-profit youth organizations, the Council is unable to fund larger, long-term maintenance projects which a camp like Oljato needs annually to keep from deteriorating. As an example, the Council can not afford to spend money on the long-term maintenance of Stern Lodge because it does not play a direct part in the scout camp program. This is the call that The Oljato Fund intends to answer. As The Fund grows, both monetarily and functionally, it will be an avenue for all camp staff alumni and camp friends, from the 40s to 00s to preserve and enhance the Camp Oljato experience as a life-long investment for hundreds or thousands who make camp part of their summer.

Donations to The Fund

The Oljato Fund is and always will be privately run by camp staff alumni; however, anyone, individual or business, can donate money, securities, items for sale, etc. All donations will be collected under the umbrella of the Peninsula Community Foundation which provides non-profit status so all donations are tax-deductible. The focus of The Fund is strictly within hands of the donors and an advisory board, plus all those able to participate in its management. The BSA or the local Council do not have any control over the donations, although The Fund must get the Council's approval for projects (through their Facilities/Property Committee). Several members of the advisory board pro-tempore have met with the Council Executive and Facilities Committee Chairman and received their support and "blessing" to propose and proceed with anything that benefits Camp.
