My books (described more fully below):

Foundations of Psychodrama:
History, Theory & Practice
Revised 4th edition (2000)

by Adam Blatner, M.D.

Significantly Rewritten! Expanded by over 1/3! Fully updated!

This book, the intellectual companion to my Acting-In, offers the most complete rationale for the use of action methods, and may be useful not only to psychodramatists -- for trainers, to help teach; for students, to learn the basics more comprehensively -- but also for drama therapists, creative arts therapists, psychotherapists in general, and others who work with groups or to promote psychosocial skills. There are new chapters on catharsis, self-expression, imagination and play, applied role theory, the philosophical basis of Moreno's work, and Moreno's theology. The history of psychodrama has been expanded to acknowledge more fully the work of others, and psychodrama and its associated approaches are viewed as being a technology for consciousness-enhancement within a in a wider cultural perspective. (There are also some otherwise-hard-to-find photos of Moreno and his wife, Zerka.)

First published in 1973 and revised in 1988, this edition has been revised again in 1996, with updated references. Acting-In is widely hailed as the clearest and most understandable introduction to psychodrama and serves as the best basic text for learning the method.

The Art of Play:
Helping Adults Reclaim Imagination and Spontaneity

by Adam Blatner, M.D. & Allee Blatner

2nd ed (1997), 208 pages, paperback, ISBN 0876308442,

A book about the psychology and philosophy of play, its benefits, and an analysis of some of the cultural resistances to imaginative playfulness. More, though, we present an example of one method, drawn from sociodrama, which may be applied as a recreational form, a kind of slightly structured creative dramatics for adults (including seniors or older teenagers).

(Originally published by Human Sciences Press in 1988; revised, updated and republished by Brunner/Routledge in 1997; new edition in process 2009.)
